VIA Rail Canada and Auto Union Avert Strike

canadaVIA Rail Canada reports an agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union, which represents some 2,200 service, sales office and maintenance personnel. VIA Rail will continue to operate according to its regular schedule, averting a strike.

The dispute included difference over wages and pensions as well as other issues. VIA Rail and the union have been in negotiations since the fall of 2012. Parties were in conciliation since April and then moved to mediation.

VIA Rail Canada is Canada's national rail carrier, operating intercity, regional and transcontinental trains linking 450 communities across its 12,500 mile route network. VIA transports nearly four million passengers annually.
