Vienna Announces Overnight Visitor Figures

With a total of 9,843,000 overnights, Vienna was 3.8 percent below its record result for 2008, making these the Austrian capital's second best overnight figures ever. December made a significant contribution to this result, setting a new record with 916,000 overnights.

The four countries at the head of the overnight rankings in the top 10 list for 2009 each experienced a slight decline: Germany (2,077,000 overnights), Austria (1,970,000) and the U.S. (508,000) were each down 2 percent, while Italy (560,000) was -3 percent. The result for France (285,000 overnights) was unchanged compared to the previous year. On the other hand, there were sharper drops for Switzerland (284,000 / -7 percent), and above all the United Kingdom (359,000 / -10 percent), Russia (284,000 / -12 percent), Romania (272,000 / -13 percent) and Spain (308,000 / -15 percent). The "Greater Vienna" region (Vienna together with seven adjacent communities) will probably report a total of around 10.5 million overnights in 2009.
