What's On in Cancun This Summer

Summer sizzles in Cancun and here's the latest coming out of the already hot destination, which was ranked the number three destination for American travelers by STR Global, behind Orlando and Las Vegas.

Nizuc Resort & Spa has opened as the newest property in Cancun. In Punta Nizuc, the luxury resort has 29 Garden Pool Villas, 44 Ocean Suites and 201 Residence Suites. Exterior suite features include private pools, outdoor gardens, decks, panoramic ocean and mangrove views and more. While on property, guests can experience five swimming pools, two beaches, a kids club and a 30,000-square-foot ESPA spa. Tip: Try the Mayan Cacao massage. Dining options include four bars and six restaurants, as well.

Coming Soon: According to MarketWatch, Starwood Hotels & Resorts has debuted its Aloft brand in the Hotel Zone, as well, next to the Cancun Center. The 177 loft-like rooms feature nine-foot ceilings and oversized windows. The hotel also has a rooftop pool, a re:fuel cafe, a re:charge gym and a re:ix communal lobby area.

Nature lovers, listen up. Sea turtle season is officially upon Cancun. The destination has kicked off a conservation program, of which 90 percent of the beachfront hotels in Cancun and Puerto Morelos are involved with. Together, they have set up Campo Tortugero in partnership with the City Council and the Department of Ecology. Pamphlets of information are sent to all the beachfront hotels with tips on how to facilitate the nesting process and how to ensure survival for the endangered species.

Lovers of Shark Week ought to head south July 11-14 for the Sixth Annual Whale Shark Festival, which takes place in Cancun and Isla Mujeres. While whale shark season officially kicked off on May 15, and will last through mid-September, the destination is hosting specific festivities in July dedicated to explaining the importance of the species. Whale sharks, loamy known as Dominos, measure between 15 and 50 feet. It is estimated that 1,400 whale sharks pass through Isla Mujeres every year, so a chance of a sighting is very high. Celebrations during the event include interactive activities for families and include raffles to win tours to swim with the beasts.
