Drinks Report: Shaken…and Stirred


Bond’s signature catchphrase first appeared in the 1956 novel Diamonds are Forever, but his onscreen character didn’t utter it until 1964’s film Goldfinger, starring Sean Connery. It’s been linked with him ever since, even though martini purists will declare that the cocktail is only ever made with gin, and should always be stirred. Convention be damned, the dapper, debonair has a penchant for the former; bartenders around the country share their versions for the opening of Spectre—three stirred, one shaken.

This play on the classic Vesper—which was named for a character in the 1953 film Casino Royale—uses mezcal in place of gin and vodka.

Instead of a lemon peel, Fee’s Orange Bitters and Amaro Ramazzoti are used to impart citrus into the cocktail and pair with the mezcal,” explains Cavarra.

2 oz. Del Maguey Mezcal Vida
1 oz. Lillet Blanc
¼ oz. Amaro Ramazzoti
1 dash Fee’s Orange Bitters

Add all ingredients to a cocktail glass, add ice and stir until well chilled. Strain into a chilled Georgian glass.

This Martini riffs eschews gin or vodka for whiskey, adding a golden color reminiscent of Bond’s nemesis in the 1965 film Starring Sean Connery. “The flamed orange peel? That’s the 007 factor,” declares Call.

2 oz. Rittenhouse Rye
¾ oz. Carpano Antica Vermouth
¾ oz. Cointreau
½ oz. fresh lime juice
Flamed orange peel, for garnish

Add all ingredients except the garnish to a cocktail glass, add ice and stir until well chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe glass, and garnish it with the flamed orange peel.

You Only Live Twice

Because you can’t have a Bond-like suavity after a few gin or vodka drinks, Phillips says, he swaps it out for low proof dry Sherry and rosé wine, and adds chocolate bitters for a bit of depth. “This is most definitely an elegant drink for a dignified gentleman.”

2 oz. Gonzalez Byass Tio Pepe Fino En Rama Sherry
1 oz. Navarre Pineau des Charentes Rosé
2 dashes Scrappy’s Chocolate Bitters
Orange twist, for garnish

Add first three ingredients to a cocktail shaker, add ice and stir until well chilled. Strain it into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with an orange twist expressed over the glass and then discarded.


Belvedere Spectre 007 Martini

The official drink of the new Bond film, this dirty martini is classic and elegant, and pays homage to the vodka cocktail (and Bond’s preference for shaking it). It’s smooth, rich and a little bit savory from muddled olives and olive juice. Garnish it with a lemon twist to add a little brightness.

2 oz. Belvedere Vodka
1/3 oz. dry vermouth
1/6 oz. Sicilian green olive bring
1 Sicilian green olive

Gently muddle olive in the base of a mixing glass. Add the remaining ingredients, add ice and shake hard to chill. Double strain the mixture into a chilled Martini glass.
