Reuters and other sources are reporting that a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Crete on Saturday, causing minor damage. Local police and fire brigades have said that there were no reports of casualties or serious destruction.
The earthquake struck at 9:11 a.m. eastern time, with the epicenter 22.5 miles below the seabed and 43 miles west of Chania on Crete, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
Tremors were felt as far as the Greek capital Athens, some 180 miles away, and across southern Greece, including the Peloponnese peninsula and the Cyclades cluster of islands, the Athens Geological Institute said.
Local media in Crete said the quake caused minor damage to shops and houses in Chania.
