Two-Day Lufthansa Strike Grounds Flights

The BBC is reporting that pilots at Lufthansa are set to go on strike on Monday and Tuesday as part of a dispute over retirement benefits.

The walkout, the ninth since April, is expected to affect short- and medium-haul flights across Germany from noon local time on Monday until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday. The Vereinigung Cockpit union also expects the airline's long-haul flights to be affected by Tuesday.

Lufthansa reportedly asked for new talks and called the strike disproportionate. The BBC noted that this year's aviation strikes have cost airlines an estimated $160 million.

On its website, Lufthansa said that it was "working intensely" on a special timetable for the strike period. All flights operated by the Lufthansa Group airlines Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Germanwings, SWISS and Air Dolomiti (operated by OS, SN, 4U, LX, EN) will not be affected.
