San Miguel de Allende, one of the colonial towns outside of Mexico City, is known for its UNESCO World Heritage status, boutique hotels and, now, its cosmopolitan cuisine.
There are more than 76 restaurants in San Miguel, from five-star eateries to hole-in-the-wall joints. Here are some that are making headlines:
TU SMA (Your San Miguella de Allenda) is a city-wide movement that has inspired many and now includes an open air farmers' market every saturday, as well as the use of the ingredients by a number of chefs.
Mexico City's Pujol Chef, Enrique Olvera, has made Moxi, the restaurant in The Matilda hotel, his newest playground by employing La Purisimo de Jalpa Farm to create fruit and cheese pairings exclusively for Moxi, as well as other creations.
Located next to the Parish of St. Michael the Archangel, the rooftop bar La Azotea offers Spanish fusion cuisine and has become known for its 'tacos de jicama'. For those craving flavors of the sea, La Parada offers Peruvian cuisine by Le Cordon Bleu in Lima student, Alexandra Gutt. Seafood lovers would also enjoy Hank's New Orleans Cafe & Oyster Bar, founded by American chef Bob Thieman.
On June 7, the second edition of Cinco Chefs, Cinco Tiempos, Cinco Horas will take place at the Casa de Aves hotel. This project invites national and international chefs to cook a dish to raise awareness of the city's cuisine and that of the state of Guanajuato. Attendees can select one course from each chef.
From June 13 to 15, Parque Juarez will host the Sabores of San Miguel fair, offering visitors and locals several culinary activities, including wine tastings, showcases, conferences, live music and activities for children.
Another event within the SMA Gourmet program is the International Chefs Meeting, Taste of Rosewood, that brings world-class chefs to live a new experience: the chefs go shopping at typical markets and stores around the city, and then they cook in the house of a San Miguel local inhabitant.
