A Laid-Back Haven for City Slickers

Question: Do you know where the world’s largest kaleidoscope is housed? If not, don’t feel bad. I am sure most people don’t have an answer. In fact, I had no idea until this afternoon, when I met with representatives from the Emerson Resort & Spa in New York’s Hudson Valley. You have probably guessed it by now, but yes, the property is home to the Emerson Kaleidoscope, which measures more than 60 feet and features three 38-foot mirrors.

Although this hotel might be a good pick for travelers who are fans of Guinness world records, chances are Manhattanites seeking solace from the pace of city life are more the property’s clientele. Two hours from New York City, the Emerson features such laid-back activities as winery tours and guided hikes—I even hear fly-fishing is a major draw.

The hotel is separated into two areas, the Eastern-inspired, adults-only, all-suite Inn, as well as the family- and pet-friendly lodge, which features a number of different room types.

If you travel to the Emerson, you might see the same faces more than once; the hotel prides itself on having a high repeat-customer rate. Bill and Hillary Clinton might even be in the mix. The former president and current secretary of state stayed at the property for part of their vacation this past August.

Other amenities include a 10-treatment-room spa; Club Room, replete with a billiards table as well as TV and chess set—I hear the owner is a big fan of the Red Sox and the chess pieces are miniature Red Sox and Yankees players; and Phoenix restaurant for modern, American-inspired cuisine.

The property also caters to weddings and corporate travel. Visit www.emersonresort.com.
