For Gramercy Park Hotel, a Restaurateur With Buzz

It’s been a good week for famed NYC restaurateur Danny Meyer. Hot on the heels of his much-heralded food concessions at the just-opened CitiField, the man behind such big-name Manhattan eateries as Blue Smoke, Union Square Café and the Gramercy Tavern is partnering with Ian Schrager for a new eatery at the trendy Gramercy Park Hotel.

This fall, Meyer will unveil an Italian restaurant in the hotel’s street-level space where Waikiya—a Chinese restaurant that closed in December—was located. Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group will also operate room service at the hotel.

As Crain’s New York reported, it is Meyer’s first new restaurant since he opened The Modern at the Museum of Modern Art in 2005, and it is his first hotel project.

From museums to ballparks to hotels—not to mention standalone restaurants—Meyer has the Big Apple covered. Can high-end street vendors be far behind?
