Kimpton Seafire Debuts Coral Restoration Program

Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa in Grand Cayman is launching a program called Seafire Guardians. The resort said that the new program complements its already sustainable open-air architecture, gardens, solar panels, eco-friendly materials and natural element-rich designs.

Seafire Guardians, in partnership with a local dive company, functions to protect, develop and regenerate the ocean’s coral reefs. Through a PADI Coral Restoration course, hotel staff members became coral certified, so they can extract what they can from the “rainforests of the sea.”

Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa says coral supports a quarter of marine life and contributes to the ecosystem by functioning as organic breakwaters and defending the island from hurricanes and storms. Using aquatic nurseries, the Guardians relocate and cultivate coral underwater.

Not only do the Guardians work in the sea, but they also contribute to beach clean ups and turtle nesting, which shines a light on the environmental issues that are faced in Cayman.

The program is not limited to staff members. Guest can enquire with the resort team and join-in on conservationist efforts, although those looking to be part of the coral conservation program must be both PADI Open Water certified and PADI Coral Conservation certified. Guests at Kimpton Seafire can train at the resort with an affiliate third party dive team.
