Mukan Resort Debuts as First Luxury Eco-Resort in Sian Ka’an Biosphere

New in Tulum: Mukan Resort has officially debuted as the first luxury eco-resort in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

To reach Mukan, guests travel from the entrance of the biosphere by boat on a private 45-minute voyage through dense mangrove forests before reaching the resort’s private dock. The resort has four standalone beachfront bungalows and a main villa housing five guest suites, each with its own private terrace. There is also a thatched-roof gourmet restaurant, oceanfront spa facility and al fresco cigar bar, as well as canopy beds on the beach and hammocks strung on the trees throughout the resort.

The surrounding biosphere is one of Mexico’s largest protected areas with forests, wetlands, lagoons, extensive mangrove stands, cenotes, forested islets, sand beaches and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The reserve is home to many species of animals such as jaguars, migratory birds, marine turtles, a variety of colorful fish and more.

In keeping with the responsibility of the biosphere, Mukan’s sustainability efforts are implemented through eco-friendly systems for energy generation and water purification. The use of solar panels, a wind turbine, water filtration and local materials for all construction needs are just some of ways Mukan is committed to reducing its ecological footprint.

Personalized fine dining also plays a role in the Mukan experience, where the chef creates each meal to the guest’s preferences. In other words: no menus are needed. Regional and internationally inspired dishes are created with locally sourced and sustainable ingredients. Each day, coffee and fresh coconuts delivered to guests’ rooms. Guests can also opt for an island picnic or a laid-back meal in a cabana, while dinner is presented fireside.

Guests at Mukan will can use the resort’s kayaks, paddle boards, snorkeling equipment, bicycles and yoga mats. Off-site excursions such as canoeing through the mangroves, diving through the waters of the Yucatan’s cenotes, and fly fishing in lagoons are available to book through the concierge.

Rates begin at $420 per night, based on double occupancy.
