Reykjavik to Get New Conference & Concert Center

Reykjavik is on its way to becoming a hot business hub when a new conference center opens in the city in 2011.

Harpa, the new 300,000-square-foot concert hall and conference center, will feature four separate halls (the largest one accommodating up to 1,800 people--that's more than most Broadway houses!) and will be located on the harbor between Reykjavik city center and the North Atlantic.

Music fans take note: Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Center is also the prospective home for the Iceland Symphonic Orchestra and the Icelandic Opera.

Construction plans include a 250-400 room, four-star hotel on the Austurbakki site, next to the Concert Hall and Conference Center. Underground walkways will link the hotel to the Center, and if everything goes as scheduled, the hotel will open in May 2013.

Harpa is due to open in May 2011 and was designed by Henning Larsen Architects and artist Olafur Eliasson.
