Rome to Set New Hotel Tax

The Daily Mail and other sources are buzzing about Rome's new "accommodation tax" that will begin as of January 1, 2011. Guests staying at four and five-star hotels will be pay an extra €3 ($4) per night, and there will be a €2 ($2.50) per night tax on all other accommodations.

Tourists will be advised of the 'Contributo di Soggiorno' tax upon arrival, and they will have to pay the extra fee before they check out.

Hotels cannot tax more than 10 nights per stay, and children under two and youth hostels will be exempt from the tax.
