Man Beheaded, Another Shot Dead in Cancun

The Straight Times and various other media outlets are reporting that Mexican police on Monday found a headless male body and another person shot dead in the resort city of Cancun, after a violent weekend which saw 16 beheadings in Acapulco, on the opposite coast.

More than 50 gangland-style killings were reported across Mexico over the weekend, amid rising suspected drug violence blamed for more than 30,000 deaths since 2006, according to the report.

A decapitated body was found near a main avenue in Cancun accompanied by its head and a message from a criminal gang, state authorities said on Monday.

Another body, carrying bullet wounds, lay in a downtown area home to strip clubs, also with a message from a criminal gang, they said.

Although Cancun has seen little drug violence compared with other areas of Mexico, such as the northern border, authorities say the increasingly powerful Zetas drug gang operates in the area.
