The Martinique Tourism Authority announced today that the travel alert issued February 13, 2009 by the U.S. State Department in reference to the recently concluded general strike in Martinique has been lifted. Madeleine de Grandmaison, chairwoman of the Martinique Tourism Authority, issued the following statement today hailing the decision:

“On behalf of the entire tourism industry here in Martinique, let me say that we are very pleased at the decision taken by the State Department to lift the travel alert.  This marks an important step forward for us as we re-focus our efforts toward delivering the world-class vacation experience that has made Martinique famous.

“To that end, we’re working closely with our public and private sector partners – hoteliers, cruise lines, airlines, tour operators and others – to develop new incentives and promotions to reinvigorate travel to Martinique.  We will share details on the new programs as they are developed over the coming weeks.

“The strike had little impact on our ability to host stayover visitors, but now that it’s over, the Isle of Flowers can blossom as never before for all its visitors.”
