When the theme and setting of a popular television show is based on a U.S. city, it can do wonders for travel to the destination: whether it's high-heeled ladies seeking the "Sex and the City" experience in New York or the hard-working (or hardly-working) employees visiting Scranton, PA for a day at "The Office."
Although Philadelphia needs no introduction, the City of Brotherly Love could benefit from the increasing popularity of FX's "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," starring Danny Devito. The show recently got picked up by Comedy Central for syndication and is now getting an official tour itinerary.
Unfortunately, "Grilled Charlie Sandwiches" are not on the menu at Mac's Tavern, the real-life bar that Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olsen (also known as the characters Mac and Sweet Dee) opened this month in the Old City neighborhood. But it has 17 beers on tap, gastropub fare, a jukebox and occasional acoustic musical talent.
The opening of the bar gives fans of the show a reason to explore the city where the characters have done everything from cracking the Liberty Bell to running the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps Rocky Balboa-style. In a two-day, two-night itinerary, fans can see for themselves where the ego-driven characters create scenes all over Philadelphia— that is, when they aren't arguing or scheming in Paddy's Pub.
