Bishop Museum’s Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center on Oahu is home to a large working volcano that gives museum-goers an up close and personal look at the inner workings of this molten wonder.

Families will enjoy seeing a one of a kind lava melting demonstration located in the Hot Spot Theater. Audiences can expect to see pictures and video, to touch and feel two distinctive types of lava rock, and to ask questions about all things volcanic. The show culminates with the lava rock melting demonstration where lava rock is brought to temperatures of 2700-degrees Fahrenheit, poured out for all to see, then cooled. The 20-minute show seats 50 people starts daily at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. and is shown in English and Japanese.

The volcano which sits at the center of the exhibit has a children’s lava flow slide and visitors can walk or crawl through several lava tubes. In addition, the museum’s Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center offers a full set of science-based education programs and displays. The 16,500-square-foot facility boasts interactive exhibits that explore Hawaii’s ocean, wind and volcano forces that shaped our islands. Children age 2-92 will enjoy spending the day getting hands-on with everything Hawaii from plants and bugs that live deep in our mountains to fossils of specimens that once lived in our vast sea.
