SUMMERLAND, Calif. (AP) — Santa Barbara County, California, officials say a popular beach has reopened.
The Public Health Department says Monday that immediate health concerns have diminished, but it will continue to monitor Summerland Beach because oil and odors can change rapidly.
The beach was closed Friday after officials found more and more liquid oil over a 300-yard stretch.
Warnings remain in effect, and it's recommended that people and animals avoid exposure to crude oil compounds and strong odors.
It's unclear where the oil is coming from. The area has history of natural oil seepage from the ocean floor, and there are old wells in the area. Samples are being tested.
Officials believe the oil isn't connected to a May pipeline break about 30 miles away that sent crude out to the beach and ocean.
