Windstar Announces New Group Deal: Book 7, Get 1 Free
The deal is available on select Windstar Cruises itineraries. | Windstar Cruises

With more and more people planning spontaneous group vacations, Windstar Cruises has announced that, on select dates, it will give a free cruise to the eighth cruiser for every seven people booked. On higher demand cruises, it’s one free cruise for every nine people that are booked.

In addition, groups also get a discount off of standard guest fares, as well as a $100 per person shipboard credit to use on things like massages, shore excursions, or a bottle of champagne.

The new deal comes as a response to the growing trend of spontaneous celebration. More and more, people are celebrating milestone moments as they define them, taking impromptu cruises for less conventional reasons.

The cruise line cited examples like someone taking a cruise because they want one more child-free adventure with friends before the baby is born, or they just ended a relationship and they want to enjoy new happiness on a friends-only group voyage.

Guests are celebrating these decisions and markers that go beyond the typical and expected times to commemorate life milestones. Group travel at unconventional times is getting more popular, and Windstar took notice of this change.

“We have been seeing this trend and decided to do something to support it,” said Steven Kona Simao, vice president of sales for Windstar. “Why just have corporate incentives for groups? Why not let people define their own friends and family group and reward it?”

Also, on certain dates (dubbed Star Advantage dates), travel agents earn a $100 bonus commission for each individual guest booked after the first free cruise is awarded.

Able to accommodate up to 12 passengers while in motion, houseboats are popular with extended families, groups of couples or gatherings of friends. Fishing, riding personal watercraft, hiking, tubing, wakeboarding—or just relaxing on the houseboat’s top-level sundeck with a great book—all become all-day, every day possibilities when guests opt for a houseboat vacation. Each marina also offers small power boats, PWCs and water toys to enhance the experience on the water; Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave also rents kayaks and paddle boards.

TravelBound Offers 2 Percent Bonus Commission to Travel Agents
The deal will apply to bookings made from Sep. 1- Sep. 30, 2017 for travel that will take place from now until Dec. 31, 2017. | TravelBound

In light of last year’s successful deal, TravelBound has announced that it will again offer travel agents from the U.S. and Canada a 2 percent bonus commission for bookings on hotels, sightseeing tours, and transfers, bringing back the offer made in late 2016.

This year, the deal will apply to bookings made from Sep. 1- Sep. 30, 2017 for travel that will take place from now until Dec. 31, 2017.

Not only that, but the company has decided to extend the potential bonus commission to bookings made anywhere that TravelBound offers its fully independent travel (FIT) products, allowing travel agents to choose from nearly 180 countries and remain eligible for the bonus.

Last year, the bonus commission was only available to travel agents that booked travel in European destinations. With this new deal, TravelBound has given more travel agents the opportunity to take advantage of the offer and book locations that they are familiar with.

“After the success of our 2% bonus commission for European bookings last year, we saw this as an opportunity to reward our valued travel partners for any destination they specialize in for a limited time,” said TravelBound President James Phillips.

This is not the only time the company has rewarded travel agents for their service. Earlier this year, TravelBound launched a new rewards program that enabled travel agents to earn Amazon gift cards if they booked travel with the company.

TravelBound’s inventory of FIT products includes over 50,000 hotels, apartments, and villas all over the world, transfer options in over 1,000 airport and city locations, and thousands of sightseeing tours, both public and private. They offer attractions in the most popular and extravagant travel destinations, including The Caribbean, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, and South America.

Avalon Waterways Rolls Out Savings for New TV Ad Campaign
The promotion takes effect September 4, 2017. | Avalon Waterways

This week, river cruise operator Avalon Waterways is cruising into American households and television sets across travel, food and home shows through their new television advertising campaign. Beyond its two new commercial spots, Avalon Waterways has also launched the “See the World Your Way” trade campaign and promotion, which provides $299 Air and savings of $2,500 per couple, for agents to encourage clients to take advantage of the offer.

“Travel agents are an integral part of our new national advertising campaign,” said Vanessa Parrish, channel marketing manager for the Globus family of brands.  “We have always provided agents with complimentary marketing tools and support.  As part of this TV campaign, we are also arming them with a Consumer Marketing Kit on the Travel Agent Portal to access our new advertising spots, flyers, social media posts, images and more to help them ignite river cruise sales for 2018. By launching a new advertising campaign, we hope to inspire more travelers to ask for – and book – river cruise vacations with their travel agent.”

Avalon’s newest advertising campaign places a spotlight on the company’s signature open-air balconies, which blur the line between outside and indoors to form a spacious seating area for six. Avalon’s balconies do not sacrifice room space either.

At 200-square-feet, Avalon’s Panorama Suites—on two full decks of every Suite Ship—are 30 percent larger than the average stateroom. In every Panorama Suite, the guests’ beds are angled to face out so the scenery can be appreciated from the comfort of one’s bed.

“We’re for travelers who don’t follow the herd … Those who always forge their own path and have a distinct perspective of looking at the world,” said Terri Burke, managing director of Avalon Waterways.  “With our new advertising campaign, we’re showcasing that fact. Avalon Waterways presents a river cruise experience with expansive views and wider perspectives: A cruise where our traveler’s vision leads the way.”

Emerald Waterways Updates Group Value Points Program for 2018 Bookings
New bonuses take effect for group bookings before September 30, 2017 and full payments by October 31, 2017. | Emerald Waterways

Earlier this year, Emerald Waterways launched the Exceptional Group Value Program, an amenity points program that allows travel agents to select from a slew of bonuses for group bookings, including onboard amenities, marketing dollars, incremental commission, or savings on bookings. Earlier this month however, the Australian river cruise line announced an update for its program that provides even more group travel options.

Guests who book a group of five cabins or more for 2018 sailings before September 30, 2017 can choose between two promotions:

1. Fly free on all cruises of 15 days or more and $495 airfare on all cruises of 8-14 days.
2. $500 savings per person on all riverview suites and $1,000 savings per person on all balcony suites.

Besides these two promotions, groups that pay for their voyage in full by October 31, 2017 will save up to an additional $800 per couple.

With every Emerald Waterways group sailing they book, travel agents can earn Exceptional Group Value (EGV) points. The amount of points an agent receives is based on destinations and sailing dates, and can be used to customize an offer to better suit any given travel group.

For example: an agent who books a group on a Douro River cruise in Portugal in the months of July, August and November would earn four EGV points. Those points can then be exchanged for multiple amenities like an onboard cocktail party (one point) and $100 onboard credit for the group (3 points), or used to obtain a 2% bonus commission for the agent (4 points) or to get pre- or post- hotel room nights for the group (4 points). With this most recent update, Emerald Waterways has added a TC accelerator of one free with seven full paying guests for four EGV points.

These developments precede the 2018 launch of the world’s first Discovery yacht, the Scenic Eclipse, from Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, of which Emerald Waterways is part of.

Southwest Airlines Offers "Flare" Aboard Flights Affected by Solar Eclipse
Solar eclipse to occur during specific Southwest Airlines flights on August 21, 2017. | Southwest Airlines

In light of the countdown to the August 21 solar eclipse scheduled to sweep American cities from Portland, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina, Southwest Airlines is offering a special experience for travelers aboard its flights affected by this spectacle.

The airline has identified which flights will be most likely to experience maximum effects of the eclipse, giving customers on those flights “commemorative flare,” which includes special viewing glasses, cosmic cocktails and social media engagement across the atmosphere on the brand’s gate-to-gate Wi-Fi.

In a release, Southwest said that Network & Schedule Planners “modeled the operational day against projections of the umbra and penumbra," which are shadows cast by the moon’s eclipse of the sun.

The flights with the greatest likelihood of catching a view of the August 21 eclipse will be as follows:

  • Southwest flight 1375, departing Seattle-Tacoma at 9:05 a.m. PDT for St. Louis
  • Southwest flight 1368 departing Portland at 9:05 a.m. PDT for St. Louis
  • Southwest flight 1577 departing Denver at 10:20 a.m. MDT for St. Louis
  • Southwest flight 301 departing Denver at 10:20 a.m. MDT for Nashville
  • Southwest flight 1969 departing Denver at 9:50 a.m. MDT for Atlanta

In the release, manager of meteorology for Southwest Warren Qualley said that the airline plans to “showcase the glow of its everyday hospitality in a different light on these celebratory flights in [its] summer flight schedule” and that its team of meteorologists is working hard to “provide clear viewing of this solar spectacle from [its] flights.”

The next solar eclipse that will be visible in the United States is not scheduled to occur again until April 8, 2024.
