Week in Review – May 10, 2013

caribbean beachThe Caribbean topped travel news this week with word of the temporary closing of Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages and Spa. The resort will close September 1 and reopen October 19 to conduct improvements for the resort’s new “Sky Slide” waterpark feature and other back-of-house changes. All bookings during the closing are protected.

The news came as we started looking toward summer with our cover story on Top Caribbean Beaches. We highlighted beaches in Turks and Caicos, Grand Cayman, Virgin Gorda, Anguilla, Barbados, St. Martin, St. John, the Bahamas, Bermuda and Jamaica. In case you missed it, we also published a follow-up highlighting air travel to each of these destinations. You can check it out here.

In air travel news, Alaska saw a temporary scare when an eruption of the Cleveland Volcano over the weekend and into Monday morning prompted worries of disrupted air routes. Fortunately the ash plume was too low to impact planes.

In cruise news, we highlighted river cruising this week with an interview with new Asian river cruise operator Haimark, who aims to have five ships in Asia by 2015. The company will sail the Mekong, Irrawaddy and Ganges rivers and focus on luxury.
