For Pushing Entertainment Boundaries at Sea
Creating cutting-edge original entertainment — and on a grand scale is Denise Saviss, vice president, entertainment experience, Princess Cruises. Saviss and her creative team are passionate about connecting new experiences to guests, as well as integrating technology and stunning visual effects. Most visibly, she’s partnered with Stephen Schwartz (pictured with her above), the Oscar-, Tony- and Grammy-winning composer, for several original production shows, including “The Secret Silk,” which puts a contemporary spin on an ancient Asian tale. It also features life-sized puppets, created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
In addition, Saviss just announced details of another new theatrical experience, 5-SKIES onboard the new Sky Princess and Enchanted Princess (debuting in June 2020). The production’s director and choreographer Danny Teeson has previously choreographed for Grammy Award-winning artists Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Paula Abdul. With technological wizardry of sorts, 5-Skies features a virtual gaming world, digital effects, acrobatics, intricate sets and contemporary music.
Guests will “enter” a virtual reality game with main character “Gamer 1” attempting to complete a series of five increasingly difficult levels, meeting different personalities before (hopefully) reaching the highest level where the Sky Princess character resides. Saviss also will debut another new show, “Rock Opera”, on Sky Princess and Enchanted Princess; it offers glamorous avant-garde costumes and a musical soundtrack reflecting classic rock, opera and musical theater. Let’s just say this isn’t your grandfather’s cruise ship entertainment.
