Emma Major, 26
Major Traveler, an affiliate of Travel Edge
Emma Major had already traveled the world (her mother is a flight attendant with Delta) before launching Major Traveler, an affiliate of Travel Edge. In her first full year, she hit nearly $800,000 in sales, relying heavily on e-mail marketing, social media and word-of-mouth referrals. These tactics generated a strong book of business, she reports, but a turning point came when The Skimm, the online news site, produced a video in 2019 showcasing her career switch from a marketing manager to an independent contractor. “I was able to discuss both the profession and role of a travel advisor and how the job has shifted in recent years to be less transactional and more relational,” says Major. The magic was made. The Skimm video received more than 150,000 views on Instagram alone; that generated a number of new client trip requests for Major and expanded her client base from local to national.
Many of Major’s clients have been traveling since August 1; most of them are in their 20s and 30s, going to domestic luxury resorts and the National Parks, as well as the Bahamas, the Riviera Maya and Los Cabos. Major personally traveled to Mexico to understand how the travel experience has adapted during COVID and to advise her clients on what to expect ahead of their trip.
During COVID she’s also implemented planning fees and launched Major Traveler Mag in both a print and digital edition.
Michelle Leal and Christopher Sherman strongly endorse Major for her innovative way of combining “rich storytelling, her marketing education and a passion for travel. Through infotainment, she is creating marketing content that rivals that of Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure – content that’s visually stunning, has a strong perspective and reflects the zeitgeist of the moment.”
