Assurance and accountability are two concepts that Shawn Power values over all others. His focus is cruises — mainly river and small ships in the upper-premium and luxury categories. To ensure each of his clients has the best possible experience, Power sails on three to five cruises a year anonymously, so as to get the same treatment as any other traveler. He takes notes as to which sides of the ship have the best views and which experiences he considers a “must,” among other considerations. And when he isn’t cruising, we’re told he often falls asleep with a cruise magazine in hand.
He goes to these lengths so that his clients can have the best possible experience. “I’d be devastated if they returned disappointed,” Power says. “That would be on me.” And as his 117 percent increase in repeat and referral business since last year is any indicator, Powers hasn’t been devastated all too often.
The two-time American Express Pacesetter Award-winner pulled in more than $3.6 million in sales in 2016. He has been affiliated with the Avoya Travel Network since 2012 and has repeatedly received its top honors of President’s Circle and Chairman’s Club for business performance and customer service.
Power’s advice for aspiring All-Star agents? Pick a niche, become an expert in it through education and first-hand experiences, and learn to politely say “no” to clients who ask about other forms of vacations.
Looking forward, Power expects more cruises to offer activities such as bike rides or hiking. More travelers are concerned with staying healthy and fit than ever before, he says. “The more experienced travelers know that the more active they remain while on vacation, the more they can enjoy the culinary treats on board the ship [or not feel guilty about it!].”
