Alitalia reports it has cancelled half of its flights that had been scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, due to a 24-hour transport strike that is planned for that day. Some flights scheduled for the late evening of May 20 and the early morning of May 22 have been cancelled as well.
The airline says that it is taking special measures to mitigate the impact of the strike by operating bigger aircraft on domestic and international routes in order to rebook passengers affected by the cancellations onto the first available flights on the same day. Alitalia says that 60 percent of the involved travelers will still be able to fly on May 21.
For customers scheduled to fly all day May 21, the evening of May 20 or the early morning of May 22 should check the status of their flights before going to the airport on Alitalia’s website. Customers can also call the airline toll-free at 800-65-00-55 within Italy or +39 066-5649 from outside of Italy.
Travelers affected by the cancelled or changed flights from the late evening of May 20 to the early morning of May 22 will be able to rebook their travel at no additional cost or penalty, or ask for a full ticket refund. To qualify, the flight must be cancelled or the delay on departure must be more than five ours. Rebooked travel must take place by May 28.
