Connecticut's Mohegan Sun Expands

This June, construction began on a $740 million expansion project at Mohegan Sun, the massive entertainment, gaming, and meeting destination in Uncasville, CT. Travel Agent was onsite recently when Mohegan Sun's executives updated the media on the progress of the plan, dubbed "Project Horizon."

Mohegan Sun, which is adding a new hotel and casino

The cornerstone of Project Horizon is a new 43-story, 1,000-room hotel tower with a House of Blues theme and an exclusive, members-only House of Blues Foundation Room. The hotel will open in two phases: the 700 Mohegan Sun rooms are expected to open in the spring of 2010 and the 300 elite House of Blues rooms, guests of which will check in at separate registration area, are slated to open in the summer of 2010.

The tower will also include a 15,300-square-foot House of Blues Music Hall with a capacity for 1,500 people, a 20,000-square foot Mandara Spa, more than 115,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, a Kids Quest II child care center and a new gaming area—the 64,000-square-foot Casino of the Wind. Project Horizon will also add an expanded Asian gaming experience: Sunrise Square will be in the existing Casino of the Earth and is expected to open in August 2007.

Mohegan Sun Country Club

Executives also announced that the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, which owns and operates the destination, recently closed a $4 million purchase of the nearby Pautipaug Country Club Golf Course in Franklin, CT. The golf course reopened in June as the Mohegan Sun Country Club at Pautipaug and is open to all casino guests and convention-goers.

Mohegan Sun encompasses 240 acres along the ThamesRiver in scenic southeastern Connecticut—15 minutes from the museums, antique shops and waterfront of the well-traveled Mystic area.

There are more than 60 retail shops and restaurants, and the resort also includes the 10,000-seat Mohegan Sun Arena that hosts sporting events and concerts, as well as an intimate Cabaret Theatre.
