Stats: Nearly 4 Million Americans Visited Cancun in 2017

New U.S. statistics show nearly 4 million Americans landed at the Cancun International Airport in 2017, with the highest rate of travelers arriving from Atlanta, Los Angeles and Dallas.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism of Quintana Roo, Marisol Vanegas Perez, says that a recent report by the Department of Commerce of the United States reported 3,942,135 Americans landed at the airport during 2017, a 7.1 percent increase over the previous year.

According to the report, the most-traveled from American airports include Atlanta, with 8.4 percent of passengers, followed by Los Angeles with 7.7 percent. The third most traveled-from airport was Dallas, with 7.6 percent of passengers leaving Dallas International for a trip to Cancun.

Other American airports with high Cancun destinations include Chicago (7.31 percent), New York (7.19 percent) and Houston (7 percent) followed by Denver, Newark, Charlotte, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Detroit and Baltimore.

American airports with the highest growth rate of departures bound for Cancun were Los Angeles International Airport, Chicago O'Hare, J.F.K., Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, all of which grew by double digits.

The report shows that although the travel months of August, September and October were affected by tropical storms and hurricanes, the market recovered in December, ending the year with increased figures over 2016.

All in all, 2017 remained a steady travel season for Cancun with the Cancun International Airport serving just over 23.6 million passengers. The Ministry of Tourism reports that during 2017, Mexico received 39 million visitors, an increase of nearly one million from the previous year.
