Sunwing Flights Depart From Atlanta's New Terminal

Vacation Express' Sunwing Airlines reports its non-stop flights to Cancun and Punta Cana now depart from the new Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal that opened at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).

Passengers will check in at the Delta ticket counter, Vacation Express says. The new service to Cancun started Friday, May 25, 2012; service to Punta Cana started Saturday, May 26.

The new $1.4 billion, 1.2 million sq. ft. Maynard H. Jackson Jr. Terminal opened May 16. Vacation Express says the terminal can accommodate more passengers and should make international travel easier and should lessen congestion in the main terminal.

The new terminal introduces a second "front-door" for the Atlanta airport along with a new 12-gate Concourse F, which, combined with the current 28-gate Concourse E, makes up the new 40-gate international air travel complex, Vacation Express says.

The new complex includes security checkpoints, another U.S. Customs facility, two more parking structures, an extension of the
people-mover train and a baggage claim area.

International travelers in the Atlanta area access the new international terminal from a new entrance further east of the current "main/domestic" airport. Domestic travelers will continue to take the normal route to the main terminal.

All international travelers will check-in at and return to the new international terminal. International flights will depart from/arrive at Concourses E or F. Baggage claim for international arrivals (regardless of concourse) is located in the new international terminal.

Travelers returning from an international flight with Atlanta as the final destination will claim baggage there, and will no longer need to recheck their baggage upon exiting Customs.

There is a passenger pick-up area and ground transportation center at the new international terminal, Vacation Express said. From the international terminal, complimentary shuttles (operating 24/7) are available to both the domestic terminal (a 12 minute ride) which includes MARTA (Atlanta's Rapid Transit system), as well as to the rental car area (a 15 minute ride).

New summer charter programs via Sunwing Airlines from Atlanta, Nashville and Cincinnati started May 25.
