Wednesday Briefing: Strike Cancels Flights in Germany

A strike by ground crew workers represented by the union Verdi has resulted in the cancellation of over 100 flights throughout Germany, the Local de reports. 112 flights have been cancelled at Tegel airport and another 22 cancelled at Schönefeld in Berlin. Stuttgart has also reported several cancellations, while Hamburg, where the strike is also underway, has yet to report any problems.

Airberlin reports that all departures on February 8 until 11:00 am local time at Berlin Tegel will be delayed or cancelled due to the strike, and that passengers should also expect potential delays and flight cancellations at Hamburg and Stuttgart. Customers holding tickets for cancelled flights can book on the same route and within the same fare without charge, for travel from February 9 through 15.

Lufthansa is also advising travelers to check the status of their flight prior to departure. For travelers who have purchased a train ticket from Deutsche Bahn, in the case of a retroactive refund, the value of the unused flight coupon is applicable. The airline also requests that travelers apply for a refund with their issuing office after the completion of their trip.

Verdi is negotiating for ground crew to receive salary increases of between one and two Euros per hour, according to the Local de. Negotiations are set to resume Friday.
