The New York Times reports that the U.S. has restored diplomatic relations with Myanmar following a series of political and economic reforms in the country, including a ceasefire with Karen rebels and the release of political prisoners.
This move follows a recent upswing in interest in travel to the country. A study by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) showed strong travel growth during 2011, and this past summer two tour operators, Journeys Within and The Khiri Travel Group, launched programs in the country. Additionally, Donna Evans of Andavo Travel highlighted the region in Travel Agent’s look at Emerging Destinations in September.
“With Indian and Chinese influences and Buddhism mixed with many ethnicities, the people are special, the culture is unique, the history is wonderful and archaeological sites are abundant,” Evans told Travel Agent at the time.
