Acapulco Braces for Another StormOctober 22, 2013 By: Meagan Drillinger
Just as Acapulco was ready to stand again following Hurricane Manuel, another storm readies to make its mark. Hundreds of people were evacuated along Mexico's southern Pacific coast yesterday, October 21, as Hurricane Raymond hangs over the area.
The category three hurricane, according to Reuters, was stationary with winds blowing up to 125 miles per hour. Right now the hurricane is 105 miles offshore, but forecasters are saying that it could move closer to the coast. Acapulco is being hit with heavy rain, and by yesterday afternoon parts of the city were covered with water. "Acapulco's beaches were almost deserted on Monday afternoon as winds picked up," the article reports.
The Gulf Coast in Mexico is also facing heavy rains because of a cold front from the north. "If Raymond carries on moving at this speed and the cold front keeps holding it, we'll have permanent rain for the next 72 hours," Luis Felipe Puente, head of Mexico's national emergency services, told a news conference in Acapulco.
As of yesterday, Acapulco's airport remains open, which is a positive considering that the city's economy relies so heavily on tourism, and that sector took a beating during Hurricane Manuel.
