American Adds Heathrow Fee For Fuel Problems

American Airlines has imposed a $5.25 per passenger fee on all departures and arrivals from London's Heathrow Airport to help offset the $20,000 it spends daily to bring in extra jet fuel by tanker. Jet fuel shortages at Heathrow occurred after a recent explosion at a London oil depot that destroyed one jet fuel supply line to Heathrow. The International Air Transport Association will meet Thursday to try and find an alternative to the current fuel rationing system Heathrow airport has set up. Foreign carriers have complained that British airlines based at Heathrow are permitted to fill up with more fuel than their non-UK competitors. The U.S. State Department last week complained to Britain that American carriers are being unfairly penalized.
