CouponCabin.com Survey Finds Many Americans Can't Afford to Travel During the Holidays

A new online CouponCabin.com survey, conducted nationwide by Harris Interactive, states that nearly one-quarter of American adults won’t travel to holiday celebrations this year because of the cost of travel. 32 percent, or one-third, of U.S. adults also reports that they have missed a holiday celebration, because they couldn’t afford the travel costs.

Jackie Warrick, president and chief savings officer at CouponCabin.com, said, “The holiday season overall can be a budget breaker for many people, and travel costs can be the tipping point. Many people are planning their travel far in advance and doing comparative research to get the best deals possible. If holiday travel costs are worrisome, consider getting friends and family to agree on a date early or at a closer
location for some.”

In the same survey, almost 30 percent of U.S. adults stated that they would travel more than 100 miles to celebrate the holidays this year. A majority was planning to travel by car. Some of the ways in which those who took the survey planned to save money included: using a last minute deal, using a travel agent, using an online coupon or coupon code, using frequent flier miles/credit card reward points, and researching ahead of time on travel sites.

Jackie Warrick also offers some tips on how to reduce travel costs, which include: canvasing the area to see which airports and/or train stations close to the area of travel are least expensive, renting a car, and booking the flight, hotel and rental car together, which will result in a discount.

The survey was conducted online by Harris Interactive from November 4 through November 8, 2011, among 2, 042 adults, aged 18 and older.
