Mother's Day Travel Stress

FamilyWith family summer vacations and Mother’s Day approaching, results from a recent survey from Fly.com may prove relevant.

The survey says 72 percent of moms believe that airlines do not always adequately cater to travelers with children and many new policy changes have been unfriendly towards families.

What’s more, 51 percent believe it is unacceptable for airlines to ban parents with elite status or tickets from bringing young children into first-class airport lounges; 30 percent did not like airline decisions to prevent children from sitting in certain seat rows, and 69 percent were unhappy about the elimination of pre-boarding for families traveling with children.

There is a clear consensus that flying with kids is stressful, as 68 percent of traveling moms rate their level of stress as moderate to extreme. The leading cause of this anxiety is not their children’s physical or mental comfort, but worry over whether their children will disturb other passengers.

Borrowing from the survey, mom’s suggest more child-friendly amenities such as child play areas in airports, dedicated family security lanes, complimentary in-flight activity packs and appropriate in-flight entertainment programming.

As 64 percent of moms say they will likely be flying with their child/children in 2013, it may be profitable for airlines to create targeted services that cater to them as a clientele, thereby developing a rapport that will drive loyalty and revenue.
