X-Ray Screening Arrives in the U.S.

December 5, 2006 By: Dan Butcher Travel Agent

Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport will X-ray passengers' bodies to check for concealed weapons or explosives under a new federal screening program, the Wall Street Journal reports. The technology isn't new, but privacy concerns have kept the system out of U.S. airports until now. The Transportation Security Administration says it will alter the X-ray images to blur certain parts of the body while searching for prohibited items. The machines will be used as a secondary screening measure and passengers will still be able to request a traditional pat-down search in place of the X-rays. Plans call for one machine in Phoenix by Christmas with expansion to more airports early next year in a pilot program.
