American Airlines passengers will soon be able to stream TV shows and movies at 35,000 feet.

The North American airline unveiled plans to roll out entertainment on demand, an inflight streaming video product, to approximately 400 Wi-Fi enhanced aircraft by the end of 2012.

Entertainment on demand is currently available on board American Airlines flights operated by 15 767-200 aircraft. They are primarily transcontinental routes between JFK and Los Angeles and JFK and San Francisco.

Additionally, this streaming video product will be installed on more than 90 MD-80 aircraft before the end of 2011. The remainder of this fleet, including additional MD-80 aircraft and Boeing 737-800 aircraft, will be equipped by the end of 2012.

To celebrate, flyers on American’s 15 767-200s will receive an introductory price of 99 cents per TV show and $3.99 per movie. They will also get a free Internet session for a future flight with the purchase of a TV show or movie through October 15, 2011.

Customers do not have to purchase inflight Wi-Fi in order to use entertainment on demand.

Powered by Gogo, entertainment on demand is presently compatible with certain personal laptops.

A content library features more than 100 movies and TV shows that will remain accessible for viewing after the customer has landed.
