EU Weighs New Airline Rules

September 12, 2006 By: Dan Butcher Travel Agent

European Union aviation experts agreed on EU-wide rules to require airline passengers to remove laptop computers so they can be scanned separately during carry-on-baggage checks, but they delayed a decision on restricting liquids in hand luggage, the Associated Press reports. A decision on whether to follow the U.K. and the U.S. in banning carry-on liquids will be made after more technical discussions next week, the EU said. European airlines would support strict restrictions on carrying liquids and gels onto passenger planes, but they oppose a complete ban, an industry spokeswoman said. The EU also was looking at possible new restrictions on the size of hand luggage.
