Beaches Reopen at Two Mexican Resorts

March 19, 2010 By: Joe Pike

The Iberostar Tucan and Iberostar Quetzal now offer two newly renovated beaches thanks to a government project that began January 21.The government implemented the project in an effort to rebuild the beaches of Playa del Carmen after severe erosion began approximately three years ago.

“Iberostar worked closely with the Mexican government on this project to ensure that the beaches were rebuilt to better than their original state,” noted John Long, vice president sales and marketing for Iberostar, in a written statement. “As a brand that is synonymous with high quality and memorable experiences it was important that our beaches are at their absolute best.”

The project began with the removal of a number of sand bags known as “sand whales” that were placed on the beach in Playacar by the government during the first quarter of 2008 in an effort to counteract erosion. Additional sand was also brought in from the bank between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel to reconstruct the beach.

As a result of the project, the properties now offer a 180-foot wide beach in front of the Iberostar Quetzal and a 272-foot wide beach in front of the Iberostar Tucan. Prior to reconstruction, the beach in front of the Iberostar Quetzal was 60 feet wide and 173 feet wide in front of the Iberostar Tucan.
