In 2009, when Travel Agent first toured what was then called the CuisinArt Resort & Spa, we really didn’t think there was much the Anguilla luxury resort could do to improve itself.

We stand corrected. Here is a look at the positive changes the resort has made since then.

The Evolving CuisinArt

In a June 7, 2011, public auction, the resort’s owner, billionaire entrepreneur Leandro P. Rizzuto, placed the highest bid on Temenos after the property had fallen into receivership. Located next to CuisinArt Resort on a four-mile stretch of Anguillan beach, the luxury development project comprised beachfront estate homes, luxury villas, a $50 million Greg Norman-designed 18-hole golf course and a hotel.

Later that summer Rizzuto signed an agreement to purchase Temenos, and CuisinArt assumed ownership of the entire project in late August 2011. The resort reopened in October 15 under its new name, CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa.

Improvements Underway

Under CuisinArt Resort management, the 275-acre beachfront property formerly known as Temenos is undergoing a comprehensive restoration process to raise it to CuisinArt’s five-star standards. Initial efforts have focused on the beautification of the 7,063-yard championship golf course. Refurbishing the property’s seawater reverse osmosis plant is a major component of this process, as the plant desalinates and purifies the water used on course, vastly improving the quality and thickness of the greens.

Improvements to the golf course will be followed by an upgrade of the property’s onsite Mediterranean-styled clubhouse, which features 33,500 square feet of flexible event space, including an expansive terrace that boasts sweeping views of the course, Caribbean Sea and neighboring islands of St. Maarten and Saba.

Two New Restaurants

CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa continues to expand luxury offerings with the launch of two new signature restaurants, Italia and Tokyo Bay, which opened just in time for the New Year.

Under the direction of Chef Massimo Telessi of Parma, Italy, Italia lays out an inspired menu of classic Italian cuisine, incorporating fresh herbs and vegetables from the resort’s on-site hydroponic farm. Open for lunch and dinner, Italia features a gourmet selection of artisanal pastas, meat dishes and fresh local seafood specialties. Italia is on the first floor of CuisinArt Golf Club’s palatial Mediterranean-style clubhouse.

Tokyo Bay, the island’s first authentic Japanese restaurant, has an innovative menu of sushi and teppanyaki specialties created by renowned chef Ken Lin. The contemporary-chic Tokyo Bay features an elegant private dining room and rooftop lounge.

Resort Within a Resort?

During the recent 30th annual Caribbean Travel Marketplace in the Bahamas, we sat down with David Lyon, director of sales for CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa in Anguilla, and learned that Leandro Rizzuto had just signed an agreement to build a separate as-yet-unnamed 70-room resort near the recently acquired golf course. Lyon said the project is still a “few years” away and will include a small conference center and a wedding facility.

Celebratory Package

In celebration of the recent acquisition, CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa is offering a special five-night/six-day “Tee Up & Revive” package, which includes rounds of golf, spa treatments, dining experiences at the resort’s signature restaurants and more. Some notable inclusions in the package are beachfront suite accommodations; three rounds of golf; two 50-minute spa treatments or a couples massage; lunch for two at Mediterraneo; dinner for two or a theme dinner at Le Bistro at Santorini; daily breakfast at Mediterraneo or in-room continental breakfast; airport and ferry; meet-and-greet service and more.

“Tee Up & Revive” rates begin at $5,255, based on double occupancy, through April 13. The package applies to new bookings only and cannot be used with any other promotions. Blackout dates apply and the promotion is subject to change.

The Spa

After a $10 million renovation, the new Venus Spa is almost three times as large as it was when we visited the property’s original spa back in 2009. It now covers about 27,000 square feet of total space and features 16 treatment rooms.

We tried the Warmed Seashell Massage. This is a classic massage, only instead of hands rubbing your body, you have heated seashells filled with warm gel. We had an 80-minute treatment, which cost $190, but unfortunately we fell asleep 10 minutes in. This was by far one of the most relaxing treatments we’ve had in the Caribbean in sometime. And although we were in dreamland for most of it, our body felt the effects for the rest of the day. Treatments are available daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guests are required to be 16 years or older.
