Artists Returning to Perform at Sydney Festival in 2012

The Sydney Festival, Australia’s largest summer festival, has announced its program for 2012.

The festival will run from January 7 through January 29, 2012 and feature a broad assortment of theater, music, dance, exhibitions, film and talks. Some of the artists that will be returning in 2012 include: choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, legendary theater director Declan Donnellan, the acclaimed National Theater of Scotland, two-time Mercury Prize winner PJ Harvey and singer Mike Patton.

The festival attracts up to one million locals and visitors every year and uses 30 venues across the city, including the Sydney Opera House. In 2012, there will be 11 world premieres, 15 Australian exclusives and 14 Australian premieres, with the presentation of more than 1500 artists from around the world. There are free large-scale outdoor events, including concerts and performances, multiple outdoor late-night venues, and even a ferry race on Sydney’s harbor.

The festival opens with Festival First Night, one of Australia’s largest free outdoor events. In past years, artists such as Brian Wilson, Grace Jones, Al Green, Emmylou Harris and more have performed. There are also performances by contemporary dancers and various bands.
