New Zealand is one of three countries to issue a travel advisory to its citizens traveling to the U.S. The advisories come in the wake of recent police shootings in both Louisiana and Minnesota.
The Bahamas also issued a similar advisory last week. The U.S. embassy of Bahrain, a small Middle Eastern island nation, on Saturday urged citizens on Twitter to be cautious of protests and other crowded areas in the U.S.
New Zealand’s advisor also recommends that citizens “avoid all protests and demonstrations as on occasion civil disorder can result.”
Whereas The Bahamas’ and Bahrain’s advisories seem primarily motivated by the recent police shootings in the U.S., New Zealand’s also focuses heavily on ongoing terrorists threats in the U.S.
“The United States remains a likely target for terrorist activity by domestic-based extremists and internationally-trained individuals and groups, and we continue to receive reports that terrorist groups are planning attacks against the United States," according to New Zealand’s advisory. “Terrorist attacks have occurred in the United States in recent years and a significant number of terror plots have been disrupted.”
New Zealand’s advisory also highlights the ongoing firearm issues that have plagued the U.S. in recent years.
“There is a higher incidence of violent crime and firearm possession than in New Zealand, however crime rates vary considerably across cities and suburbs and incidents rarely involve tourists,” according to the advisory.
