The Guardian has reported that the gunman who threw hand grenades and fired a rifle in the eastern Belgian city of Liège today has died after going on the rampage in the Place Saint Lambert, near the city's bus station, court and Christmas market. The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Nordine Amrani, Two teenage boys were killed in the attack, while a 75-year-old woman died of her injuries later. A two-year-old child was reported to be in a critical condition in a local hospital, and at least 75 people were injured.
Earlier today, the New York Times had reported that at least two people in Belgium were killed earlier today in a grenade attack by several armed men in the eastern city of Liège.
As many as 25 people were wounded in the attack from the explosions and from gunshots. The paper said a 2-year-old girl had been hospitalized and was in critical condition after the strike.
The attack occurred just after noon at a bus stop in the city’s central Saint Lambert Square, according to news reports. Television images showed blood on the cobblestones of the square, which had been sealed off by the police. Liège, according to VisitBelgium.com, is a few miles from Maastricht, Holland and Cologne, Germany, and just two hours from Paris by Thalys or one hour from Brussels by train or car. It is famous for its annual Christmas market, which is a major tourist attraction.
