Monterey County Rides Wave of Lodging Development

Monterey County, CA has more than $200 million in new properties and hotel renovations slated for development. Fairmont Hotels and Resorts [www.fairmont.com] will break ground early next year on a $100 million luxury mixed-use resort property north of Monterey in the Central Coast city of Seaside. Expected to open in 2010, the property will include a 330-room hotel, 24,000 square feet of meeting space, a 14,000-square foot Willow Stream spa, dining options, pool and a residential component including 170 condominiums and 125 single-family lots.

The Cannery Row Company [www.canneryrow.com] broke ground in August 2006 on an $80 million luxury beachfront property featuring 208 luxury rooms, 10,200 square feet of meeting space, 18,500 square feet of high-end retail, an on-site spa, and a 95-seat restaurant. The hotel is scheduled to debut in spring/summer 2008.

The Hyatt Regency Monterey [www.hyattregencymonterey.com] began a $40 million three-phase renovation in late 2006. Renovations include all of the property's 575 guest rooms, 32 suites, President's House, lobby and front desk area, restaurant and exterior landscaping of the 22-acre property. The resort will also add an 8,000-square-foot spa. The final phase of the renovation is scheduled for completion by January 2008 when the Hyatt Regency will become the Hyatt Regency Monterey on Del Monte Golf Course Resort and Spa.

The Monterey Hotel [www.montereyhotel.com] is undergoing an $8 million expansion project. The renovation adds 24 new guest rooms with private fireplaces, as well as an additional 454 square feet of meeting space, and a 1,500-square foot fitness facility.

The Salinas City Center Company, LLC [www.ci.salinas.ca.us] has announced plans to construct a new hotel and condominium property in downtown Salinas. Plans call for a facility with 140-160 hotel rooms, 120 to 160 luxury condominium units, and meeting and convention facilities to accommodate up to 500 participants. Construction is expected to begin in 2009 and the property will open no later than 2011.

Additional projects in the pipeline include a 252-room hotel and conference center and a boutique hotel, both in Seaside; a 75-room Holiday Inn Express in Salinas; and a 100-room property and a 400-room property in Marina. Visit [www.montereyinfo.org].
