Hertz Spins Off New Company Targeting Online Users

The Hertz Corporation on Thursday rolled out a new company under the Hertz brand called Simply Wheelz by Hertz, designed for online customers looking for easy and affordable access to Hertz's inventory. Rates begin as low as $15 per weekend day (two-day minimum rental) and $94 a week. Simply Wheelz has begun accepting online reservations for rentals at its initial location in Orlando, for rentals beginning September 1. Here's how it works: Customers reserve one of the eight vehicle types offered online and, upon arriving at the Simply Wheelz airport location, rent cars at a self-service machine like those used to obtain e-tickets at the airport. The machine simply scans a bar code from the printed web reservation and, once completed, customers advance directly to their car and off the lot. Hertz says the move was made to satisfy a growing number of online users. "More than 60 percent of the leisure car rental market is booked online today, and many online shoppers focus heavily on price," said Mark Frissora, chairman and CEO of Hertz.
