Chile to Boost Tourism Infrastructure in Patagonia’s Northern Ice Field

July 8, 2009 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor

The Northern Patagonia Ice Field in Chile will soon have a better infrastructure facilitating access to tourists. Chile’s National Tourism Service has plans of investing around $1 million to improve tourism infrastructure in the region. The project, expected to begin in 2010, involves setting up an observation center for studying climate change and glacial monitoring, building at least two refuges, constructing roads, pathways, signs, ramps and lookouts. The ice field has a number of glaciers and lagoons and is nestled within the boundaries of the Laguna San Rafael National Park. There are five ways of accessing the park, including one through a vehicle but none of them have been developed as yet, say local tourism operators.
