Next Wednesday, December 29, Delta Air Lines will resume codeshare flights operated by SkyTeam partner Aeromexico. This development follows the decision by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to upgrade Mexico's federal aviation authority to Category 1, the rating required to allow codesharing by any United States-based airline on another international airline's flights. Flights will go on sale December 26 through all of Delta's ticketing channels.
Codeshare flights between the airlines ceased when the FAA downgraded the oversight rating of Mexico's civil aviation authority to Category 2 and Delta removed its two letter "DL" code from Aeromexico flights. At the time, U.S. airlines were prohibited from offering codeshare service on any airline overseen by Mexican authorities. Mexico's civil aviation authority regained full compliance on December 1. Both founding members of the SkyTeam global airline alliance, Aeromexico and Delta, link their schedules through codesharing, so that customers can buy seats on the airlines interchangeably.
Under the reinstated codesharing, Delta customers will be connected between 20 Mexican airports and nine U.S. airports on more than 125 Aeromexico and Aeromexico Connect flights. Re-established cities will include Acapulco, Campeche, Durango, Tampico and Veracruz, as well as Morelia, La Paz, Merida, Chihuahua and Los Mochis.
