ASTA Offers Tips for Stress-Free Summer Travel

May 9, 2008 By: George Dooley

With the threat of high gas prices, recession, overbooked flights and long check-in delays at the airport, the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) has issued a list of summer travel tips and urges consumers to check out ASTA’s consumer website at

"The summer season is typically one of the busiest times for travel, but it doesn't have to be frustrating," said ASTA President and CEO Cheryl Hudak. "One sure way to make summer travel trips smoother is by having a travel agent take care of all your travel details.

Despite the weak dollar, some travelers will be heading overseas this summer, says ASTA. For those looking to keep expenses down, consumers can opt for destinations whose currency is tied to the U.S. dollar or trips for which they pre-pay in U.S. dollars, such as Mediterranean cruises or an all-inclusive resort.

ASTA urged air travelers to book early, arrive early, keep a close watch on personal property and take action not to get bumped. They must also be alert to new security rules and regulations and know baggage limits. ASTA also advises car travelers to plan itineraries and arrange accommodations in advance.
