Costa Rica Tightens Port Security In Wake of Mugging Attempt, As Carnival Resumes Calls

February 28, 2007 By: David Eisen Travel Agent

Costa Rican authorities have promised to ramp up security in the port city of Limon following a mugging attempt last week that was thwarted by a septuagenarian U.S. tourist on a Carnival ship. Officials said they planned on doubling the number of police on patrol in the port during cruise stopovers and that security cameras would be installed around the city. In light of Costa Rica's pledge, Carnival has decided to resume calling on Limon, beginning with the Carnival Legend's March 8 voyage. It had halted calls to Limon late last week following the incident, which occurred when three armed assailants boarded a bus ferrying tourists from the Carnival Liberty to a beach in an attempted robbery that, according to reports, was upended by a former U.S. marine in his 70s, who put one of the attackers in a headlock as the two others fled. The mugger was later declared dead, apparently from asphyxiation. The American tourist has still yet to be identified.
