CLIA Comments on Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2009

July 9, 2009 By: Brittany Wallace Travel Agent

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) made a statement today on the introduction of the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2009.

CLIA says it "remains committed to its continued work with Congress to enhance the safety and security of cruise vacations for its guests. The cruise industry has reported allegations of serious crimes to federal law enforcement agencies for many years and will continue our longstanding efforts to work with law enforcement both here and elsewhere around the world. Under the proposed legislation, the procedures for reporting allegations of crimes will be clarified and further codified, goals the cruise industry fully supports.”

The association continued to state that reporting alleged crimes is just part of the industry’s policies and procedures that make sure passengers are safe and concluded that, “as an industry, we are fully committed to the safety and security of our passengers and crew. This is CLIA’s Number One priority.”

The security and safety act comes after the cruise ship industry announced its support for the proposed federal safety legislation on Monday.
