NCL's Pride of America Leaves Kauai A Bit Early; All Guests are SafeMarch 11, 2011 By: Susan Young
Norwegian Cruise Line issued a statement today noting that it is closely monitoring the current tsunami advisory for Hawaii and the West Coast. "All guests aboard Pride of America and Norwegian Star are safe and doing well," the line said.
NCL said Pride of America left Nawiliwili, Kauai, early today at about 1 a.m. local time. It's currently at sea where conditions are safe for the vessel.
Typically tsunami waves at sea are only an inch or so above the norm, almost negligible at times. That's why ships go to sea -- the safest place for them -- when such a tsunami warning is issued. It's generally only when tsunami waves approach close to land that they rise to a higher-than-normal height and create the potential for massive damage ashore.
Once the tsunami warning is lifted and the port re-opens, NCL said "the ship is expected to return to Nawiliwili today."
Pride of America will then return to Honolulu on Saturday, March 12 and the next cruise will sail as scheduled.
Norwegian Star is at sea today as scheduled. NCL said the ship will arrive in Los Angeles tomorrow and the next cruise will sail as scheduled on Saturday, March 12.
