Royal Caribbean Assessing Norway Port Strike SituationMay 30, 2012 By: Susan Young
Royal Caribbean International (www.cruisingpower.com) informed Travel Agent this morning that Vision of the Seas is in Bergen, Norway, and Brilliance of the Seas is Flam, Norway today as planned, despite a strike in Oslo by pilot boat skippers.
The labor action is expected to possibly spread across the country by Thursday, according to the Norwegian Port Administration. That group's latest update is at http://www.kystverket.no/en/News/Pilot-Boat-Skippers-on-strike-from-Wednesday
"Both ships are expected to depart their ports of call today as scheduled," said Cynthia Martinez, a Royal Caribbean spokeswoman. "However, we are currently preparing contingency plans in the event the strike continues and either ship is unable to make their next scheduled port of calls in Norway."
The strike by pilot boat skippers - those that drive the boats that bring maritime pilots to the ships - is threatening to disrupt the start of the peak Norwegian fjord sailing season.
Vision of the Seas is scheduled to call to Geiranger, Norway, on Thursday, May 31, then spend Friday, June 1, at sea and conclude its sailing in Oslo, Norway, on Saturday, June 2.
Brilliance of the Seas is scheduled to call to Bergen, Norway, on Thursday, May 31, spend Friday, June 1, at sea and conclude its sailing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on Saturday, June 2.
